What’s New in Civil Engineering in 2022

Tags :

Innovation is perhaps the single most important aspect in the field of civil engineering. Without innovation, quality, efficiency, effectiveness, and sustainability of both commercial and residential construction projects can stagnate. This, in turn, can lead to over-budget projects that aren’t done on time — two aspects that customers, builders, and firms can’t afford to have. But each year, innovative new concepts and products are changing the world of civil engineering. Here’s what’s new in civil engineering in 2022.

Implementation of Drones

Drones are everywhere. Photographers, drone racers, or just novice pilots all enjoy getting behind the controls and discovering new and hidden things. However, drone application to job sites has become more popular in recent times.

In 2022, the implementation of drones for civil engineering projects is transforming how project managers work. By flying a drone over a construction area, managers can observe large areas of land, as well as identify any potential issues along the way.

Self-Sealing Concrete

Concrete is one of the most common building materials on the planet, but due to sudden changes in temperature and weather, it’s also prone to cracking. Fortunately, self-sealing concrete may be available in the near future.

While the technology isn’t quite ready for market, self-sealing concrete uses small fibers or capsules filled with adhesives. When the concrete starts to crack, these capsules and fibers spring into action, filling the crack, preventing additional damage, and avoiding any problems with stability or aesthetics.

At EPS Engineering, we are focused on always researching and implementing new innovations, techniques and equipment that make sense for our customers.  Cost savings and efficiency without sacrificing on quality is key.  We love sharing these new innovations we research with you, whether we choose to implement them or not.

Photovoltaic Glazing

With increases in greenhouse gas emissions and global warming at the forefront of global issues, humans need to develop a solution to keep the planet safe. One of the ideas swirling around is photovoltaic glazing.

Photovoltaic glazing is a type of outer coating that can be placed on the exterior of buildings to help them generate their own electricity. Essentially, this glaze allows buildings to supplement existing power systems and turn buildings into larger solar panels. Builders can place this glaze on several areas, such as:

  • Roof shingles
  • Skylights
  • Roof tiles
  • Building facades

With these additional power sources, occupants of the building depend less on fossil fuels to heat, cool, and power their homes.

Kinetic Footfall Power Generation

Another interesting idea in civil engineering in 2022 is kinetic footfall power generation. The idea is simple. Builders create blocks on the ground in places frequented by heavy foot traffic. When people step onto these blocks, the block connects to components that help generate power.

While this sounds like science fiction, it actually may become reality in the near future. It may not produce loads of power, but even enough to power the lights in a park is well worth the effort.

What Lies Ahead for Civil Engineering?

With so many interesting and innovative new ideas within the civil engineering field, creating new ideas may seem impossible. But each and every year, talented individuals and firms are finding ways to improve new and existing infrastructure to improve the longevity and quality of projects.

What lies next? Only time will tell, but fresh, original ideas are never too far off in the industry. The only thing left to do is sit back and wait for 2023.

How Municipal Projects Continue During COVID-19

Tags :

Although the COVID-19 pandemic continues to alter the personal and professional lives of people around the globe, many individuals continue to work on essential jobs. One of the jobs that continue as scheduled deals with municipal sewer and pipe projects. These particular projects are vital during the COVID-19 pandemic as the strain to existing infrastructure increases and more people are forced to stay at home.

Yet despite this heightened demand, workers continue to tackle projects for the convenience and betterment of citizens. Here is how our professionals brave conditions to bring people the sewer and water services they need.

Basic Safety Protocols and Precautions

Although some contractors and builders have deemed their businesses nonessential, municipal projects are an integral service. That’s why many jurisdictions are continuing their projects as scheduled. Even as these water and sewer projects continue, companies, governments, and contractors are putting specific safety protocols and precautions on work.

EPS Engineering considers safety a top priority for both our employees and the community. We follow all guidelines by the CDC and have protocols in place to continue serving our community safely.

On March 25, 2020, the Construction Industry Safety Coalition (CISC)—a group of 25 trade associations—released safety guidelines to protect employees and workers as they continued to fix or install sewer and water lines. In addition to masks and other personal protective equipment, the protocols also outline other tips, including:

  • Disinfecting and cleaning surfaces.
  • Work practices to ensure cleanliness and minimize the spread of disease.
  • How to handle potential illnesses on the job site.
  • Social distancing

Using these guidelines, municipal job sites can remain secure and free from the dangers of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Constant Assessment of Job Sites

To secure the job site, foremen and supervisors should constantly assess job sites. Not only should this include a thorough daily inspection of the site, but also making sure that workers follow the guidelines laid out by the CISC.

Social distancing should also be enforced throughout the workday, and discussions or disciplinary action handed out to workers who disobey these rules.

How COVID-19 Is Affecting Municipal Projects

Despite some companies continuing their projects and efforts during COVID-19, certain aspects of the business continue to suffer. According to one survey of the Associated General Contractors of America, 28% of companies reported that the government or a local agency had prevented them from bidding on or completing work. In addition, 22% discussed the lack of material because of a supplier cancellation, as well as up to 20% of projects cancelled or delayed for at least 30 days.

The long-term effects on municipal projects may not be recognized until after these stay-at-home directives are lifted. But our technicians, engineers, and plumbers continue to follow strict safety guidelines to ensure that our local community has the services they need.

Although “essential” is a loose definition, our workers and company repairs and builds sewer and water infrastructure and we continue to improve the lives of others during this time of uncertainty.

Our essential services are what continue to make this time less difficult, while also ensuring the integrity of infrastructure for the foreseeable future.

From our entire team at EPS Inc. We are here for our Bay Area community and remind everyone to keep hope alive as we navigate through this pandemic.

Why Is Civil Engineering More Complex?

Tags :

A civil engineering contractor provides a complex form of engineering for several reasons. Not only do civil engineers provide the transportation, utility infrastructure, and buildings that allow modern society to function, but they must also make it coexist with existing structures and nature.

With so much responsibility riding on the shoulders of civil engineering projects, it’s important to understand the various aspects that make it a complex and crucial part of all types of construction projects.

EPS Inc. has been providing civil engineering services and underground infrastructure support in the Bay Area for multiple decades. We rely on our experience, advanced equipment and professional staff to support the residential, commercial, and municipal sector in the South Bay.

Underground Infrastructure

Underground infrastructure is what makes high quality of life possible. Although few people ever see the underpinnings of plumbing, sewer, and other utility lines, they’re an integral part of everyday life.

Deciding how and where to lay underground infrastructure is one of the most difficult problems faced in civil engineering. These pipes and utility lines must follow a specific set of guidelines without interfering with existing infrastructure or affecting the property of private individuals for a prolonged period of time.

Unlike other branches of engineering, the area to build such infrastructure isn’t a blank canvas. Rather, it’s a time-consuming process that has several moving parts. Figuring out how to complete a project on time and under budget is a crucial aspect that further exacerbates the challenge of many civil engineering projects.

Limiting Damage to Existing Infrastructure

Another crucial aspect of civil engineering is attempting to limit the damage to existing infrastructure. When laying or repairing sewer lines, underground pipe, electrical lines, and other utilities, the overarching idea is to reduce the potentially devastating effect it has on roads, sidewalks, and greenery.

To complete this task, many civil engineers turn to trenchless digging. To complete underground projects without disturbing the surface, civil engineers start by assessing the damaged areas or the places that are ideal for new pipes and lines. Once they’ve determined where to start the project, trenchless digging comes into play.

Without an abundance of crew and equipment needed for digging, trenchless options reduce costs and don’t need to tear out roads or landscaping. Workers either dig a small pit to place the trenchless digging equipment or they drive the pipe downward using specialized equipment. This allows crews to complete the project with only a mild disturbance above ground.

Choosing the Right Civil Engineering Contractor for Projects

Once a civil engineering project has been conceptualized, budgeted, and planned, the next step is to find a reputable, respected, honest and experienced civil engineering contractor. Unfortunately, this is easier said than done, especially if the funding or budget isn’t concrete.

That’s why you need a licensed, experienced, and well-equipped civil engineering contractor. When you choose a company with proper licensing and experience, you can feel confident that the job will be completed up to professional standard without worrying about any shortcomings. Well-equipped and well-staffed companies can also limit the amount of time it takes to complete a civil engineering project, enabling you to stay on task.

On your next civil engineering project, don’t take any chances by going with a cheaper or less experienced contractor. The success and outcome of your venture will depend on it. Contact us with any upcoming projects no matter how simple or complex anywhere in the Bay Area.
